You may or may not recall me talking about dirt roads a few posts back and how i frequent them often here. Well dirt roads = major dust = angry agata + dirty clothes (you all following the math?). So in an attempt to save some moneys and distract myself from working on my MRP (Master's Research Paper), i decided that i've got a bar of soap and a sink, what more do i need to do some laundry? This was no big deal as most of my dirties were a a couple shirts and a few pairs of undies. But because of the omni presence of dust, i also had one super dirty pair of jeans. Dear friends, you have not KNOWN pain in the ass until you've tried to sink wash a pair of jeans with a hotel-sized bar of soap! My hands were so worn afterwards that i felt like if i'd lived in the Middle Ages, no prince would want to marry me because he'd be able to tell by my calloused hands that i was not of noble birth...what a travesty! This is not the academic life i signed up for! Also interesting was that these seemingly uncolored, faded wash jeans still managed to bleed dye like it was going out of style, which makes me wonder what color actual denim is if even uncolored jeans bleed? Enlighten a sistah in the comments if you know!
Other interesting developments include the first hot shower i've taken since Wednesday. Thursday was my areas day for the rolling blackout, which meant that there was no power from 6AM until 6:30PM, which is no big deal since i spent all day at work, but the water boiler needs electricity to heat the water...so no hot shower Thursday. Then on Friday, the receptionist forgot to turn on the main water boiler/electricity/thingy and by the time it was on, i had to go to work. And on Saturday the power was out again in the morning. So come yesterday morning, i had my first hot shower in what seemed like ages and no joke, grinned like an idiot the whole time. Oh, and Saturday night there was major rain and the power went out yet again. Something tells me that by the time i come back home, i'm going to thank the heavens for washing machines, abundant supplies of hot water and consistent electricity.
And in further beer notes, i got asked for the upteenth time why us "europeans" drink our beer cold and got told that if Kenyans drink cold beer, they get sick because their bodies aren't used to it (like a cold/sore throat kind of sick). On the other hand, the second most popular beer here is Guiness, served COLD. Seriously, i do not understand the refrigeration habits of this country.
And lastly, tomorrow is my birthday. To be honest, i'm pretty down about having to spend it by myself in what is still a foreign country to me. But i suppose this just means that we're going to have to party extra hard next year to make up for missed time!
Miss you all! Love you all! Lemme know how you're all doing!
MWA!!

Sometimes saving a few pennies does not make much sense, does it :)
