So a few of you may have noticed the facebook status update i posted late last night: Agata Gorecka just found the BEST function EVER for the 24hr security guard at my new apartment building: giant african bug killer (i need one of these back home).
Let me fill you in on the story. So late last night, i went to the bathroom to grab some tissue for my nose. As i grabbed the roll of toilet paper, i noticed that it had been frayed, as though a mouse had to tried to gnaw its way through it. i thought "hm. odd." and began a search throughout my house, throughout all the corners, under every piece of furniture and i see nada. i return to the bathroom to search through there, at which point i see on the window A GIANT SLUG!!!!!!!!!!!!! i don't mean "omg i'm a girl and there's a bug in here, aaah" i'm talking a 5-6 inch long, 1 inch round MUTANT SLUG. OH. MY. GOD. i ran out of that bathroom faster than i could yell "WHAT THE F***?!?!?!??!?" then proceeded to run out of my house altogether. squealing. at 1am. in my pajamas. without any shoes. i ran to the security guard's hut, where the dude had fallen asleep. i woke him up and he looked at me in a confused, slumber-induced daze (to be fair, i must've looked quite insane). i proceeded to tell him that i needed his help, and he asked if everything was okay, to which i responded "NO! THERE'S A BUG IN MY BATHROOM AND YOU HAVE TO KILL IT!!!!!!" At this point, he seriously must've thought that he was still sleeping, as there's no way this could actually be happening. But he was a good sport and followed me into my flat, where i stood and pointed him into the bathroom as there was NO WAY i was going in there again. He was in there for quite some time but i finally heard some death blows and he emerged from the bathroom. Bug in hand, wrapped in toilet paper. Upon seeing said bug, i did THE MOST embarrassing thing ever and SCREAMED while covering up my eyes. At this point, for the first time throughout the entire ordeal, the security guard proceeded to burst out laughing at me and ran out to throw the bug in some bushes or something (i have no idea how you would even go about trying to kill such a monster). So needless to say, i closed all my windows and they're staying that way until i'm back in the land of normal bugs. EEEEEEEEEEW!!!
So. That was last night. Today i spent a wonderful morning and afternoon with Joanna, a fellow AUCC intern from Ottawa who's working with deaf Kenyans at Handicap International. We went to the Maasai market that goes on every Sunday down the street from where i live. It's a total tourist trap, but seeing as i'm a tourist, i enjoyed every minute of it! Lots of African-type trinkets to buy, lots of haggling, lots of fun. i bought me a couple of bracelets as well as a zebra patterned candy bowl. We then went to the big shopping center near here (i was there yesterday too, to buy some stamps. How North American of me, spending an entire weekend at the mall...) and we found a candy store where i bought.........MALTESERS!!!!! i'm definitely saving them for a special occasion but dear GOD was i walking around with a huge grin on my face afterwards. i guess i could make some sort of comment here about the implications of globalization and the penetration of western goods into every corner of the world, but no. i won't. i'm just THAT happy that i found maltesers in Kenya. Who would've thought?!
And i also discovered (upon further investigations) the one downside of my new place (asides from mutant slug attacks). My shower appears to only have two settings, those being either freezing cold or scalding hot. But i'm sure as hell not complaining because scalding hot water is still hot water and i've had it every day here, which is more than i can say about every other place that i've stayed at so far....
And i'll leave you with that! Have a wonderful Monday morning! Drink lots of Timmy's for me!
love love love

Did a special occasion already happened and Maltesers are gone? We bet they are :)
